When the Spanish heirs to the throne, Prince Felipe de Borbon and Princess Letizia Ortiz, traveled to Lima in November 2011 to visit the Peruvian Parliament, they were greeted with Vicuna Wool Garments, a token of the people of Peru's deep gratitude to the Spanish government.
As a symbolic token of the Peruvian people's appreciation for Spain's economic support of Peru's development, Cesar Zumaeta, President of the Peruvian Parliament, and his wife presented the two Spanish heirs with Alpaca clothing. The finest vicuna wool, a Peruvian alpaca whose natural fibers are regarded as the best in the world, was used to make the garments.
During a trip to the Vatican, the former Peruvian president also decided to give the Pope a shawl made of vicuna wool as a present.
Actress Susan Sarandon visited the area to lead a reopening ceremony just a few months after torrential rain and landslides destroyed the only railway into Machu Picchu, destroying tourism to the famous city.
When Sarandon went to the Kuna stores in Lima and Cuzco while she was in Peru, she got even more immersed in the culture. Sarandon purchased a number of items made of alpaca wool from well-known alpaca clothing stores.
